Machine Intelligence Research Institute

Machine Intelligence Research Institute (MIRI), formerly known as the Singularity Institute for Artificial Intelligence (SIAI), is a non-profit organization founded in 2000 that conducts research to ensure the safe and aligned development of advanced artificial intelligence (AGI). The institute carries out mathematical and theoretical research to identify potential existential risks to humanity and mitigate them. MIRI is considered one of the leading organizations in the field of AI safety.
Nate Soares took over as Executive Director from Luke Muehlhauser in May 2015. Eliezer Yudkowsky, one of the institute’s founding members, continues to serve as a Research Fellow. The institute established and still operates the LessWrong community, a prominent platform for discussions on rational thinking, technology, and transhumanist ideas. MIRI has also played an active role in organizing events such as the Singularity Summit.
Research Areas and Projects
MIRI’s research focuses on ensuring that artificial intelligences align with human values, developing Friendly AI models, and mathematically analyzing potential risks. Key projects include:
- AI Alignment and Friendly AI Research: Developing algorithms and mathematical models to ensure AI systems operate in accordance with human values and ethical frameworks.
- Risk Analysis and Long-Term Impact Studies: Identifying and managing potential threats that AGI systems may pose to humanity in the future.
- Mathematical and Theoretical Models: Creating formal and logical models to predict and control AI system behaviors.
- Community Engagement and Awareness: Sharing knowledge about AI safety and transhumanism through the LessWrong community and blog publications.
The institute also conducts simulations and theoretical experiments to analyze the possible behaviors of advanced AI systems. These activities align with the core vision of the transhumanist movement, providing a safe framework for the technological enhancement of human intelligence and capabilities.
Contributions to Transhumanism
MIRI contributes to the transhumanist philosophy both theoretically and practically. Theoretically, it generates knowledge in AI safety, long-term risk analysis, and Friendly AI design. Practically, it educates communities through platforms like LessWrong and the Singularity Summit, creating a global discourse on ethical and safe AI development. The institute also provides research funding in accordance with effective altruism principles, helping ensure that transhumanist goals are pursued safely.
MIRI’s work supports humanity in safely benefiting from technological progress, advancing one of transhumanism’s key aims: the enhancement of human capacities. Its theoretical research on AI safety and ethical frameworks serves as guidance for transhumanist communities.
